When families consider senior living communities, the choices offered are often one of the non-negotiable features.
At Prairie City Landing, we understand that options are the foundation of our residents’ independence. That is why we designed our community to offer a wide variety of selections.
One area where this is clearly illustrated is our senior living dining program. Our philosophy is that everyone wants to choose what they’ll eat, where and when – regardless of where they may call home.
Prairie City Landing’s senior living dining choices
Take a look at how our residents benefit from eating healthy and take advantage of the social interaction at mealtimes. And unlike many senior communities, our choices include delectable menu selections and three separate venues.
The Rendezvous: You’ll discover a warm welcome at our popular all-day Italian-style coffeehouse and wine bar. It’s the perfect place to meet with residents after an activity or to share a glass of wine before dinner. Residents also love attending our Happy Hours with cocktails, mocktails and complimentary snacks.
The Cypress Room: When residents are in the mood for a more formal dining atmosphere, they choose the Cypress Room. Among the white tablecloths and excellent service, residents often invite family and friends to join them in a seasonally inspired weekly menu. And everyone recommends leaving room for the tempting desserts.
Natoma Café: When it’s time to enjoy California-casual senior living dining, the residents visit the Natoma Cafe. Our relaxed dining room offers favorite comfort foods including soups, salads, sandwiches, pasta and a daily chef’s special. The perfect spot when feeling hungry after a fun activity or to grab a late lunch, the Natoma Café is a favorite.
The Club Room: Another feature of Prairie City Landing that residents appreciate is the space to host a special event or celebration. Families can reserve the Club Room and arrange for catering for private parties. And if the mood suits your guests, you can invite everyone to enjoy the beautiful weather on the adjacent patio.
Family BBQs: Many of our residents love gathering their family and friends for an outdoor BBQ. Again, taking advantage of our mild weather, residents appreciate the beautiful courtyard with outdoor seating while a family member takes charge of an available gas grill.
In-home full-sized kitchens: We’ve also provided our residents with a full-sized kitchen in their apartments for those times when they want to host family or friends or are just in the mood to make lunch or one of their grandmother’s recipes.

Senior living dining: The advantages of eating well
The benefits of a nutritious diet are several, including:
- Improved physical health: A balanced diet can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis and aids in weight management.
- Enhanced mental well-being: Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids found in fish have been shown to improve cognition and reduce symptoms of depression.
- Better digestive health: A diet high in fiber from fruits, vegetables and whole grains can prevent stomach issues and promote a healthy digestive system.
- Increased energy levels: Proper nutrition ensures that older adults have the energy they need to stay active and engaged in their daily lives.
- Boosted self-esteem: When we eat right, we will likely feel better. And when we feel better, it can positively affect our outlook on life.
Challenges seniors face in getting good nutrition
While eating healthy is important no matter your age, as we grow older there can be challenges that interrupt our best attempts to maintain a nutritious diet, such as:
- Accessibility issues: Difficulty getting to the store due to mobility or lack of transportation can limit access to fresh ingredients.
- Physical limitations: Some may find cooking difficult due to mobility or physical issues. Planning, shopping and preparing meals can be exhausting and negatively impact senior living dining.
- Dietary restrictions: Managing diets for conditions like diabetes or heart disease can complicate meal planning and require special ingredients.
- Social factors: Eating alone can reduce the interest in preparing healthy meals, leading to reliance on convenience foods.
When faced with these obstacles, the unfortunate solution for some may be to substitute snacking for healthy meals and processed foods instead of nutritious. Skipping meals altogether can also happen, leaving the fuel needed for both body and mind lacking.
