As we grow older, our lifestyle preferences often evolve along with an increased need for assistance. But maintaining quality of life is just as important – no matter our age. While assisted living communities offer supportive services, it’s essential to remember that is only one feature of a meaningful life.
The differentiator of Prairie City Landing: assisted living services
Prairie City Landing is unique among senior communities in how we define and deliver assistance. Our residents live in spacious and beautiful apartments, with full kitchens and room to entertain. But if the time comes when they need support, they don’t have to sacrifice their treasured home.
Why? Because we bring the services to them.
Some communities require residents to move to another building or even an entirely different location for assisted living. Prairie City Landing knows the disruption that moving can create. But as a licensed community, our residents can remain in their homes because we discreetly provide the services in their apartments.
The view from Prairie City Landing residents
Along with 24/7 staff support, social engagement, unique activities and adventures, physical and mental health classes and healthy dining, Prairie City Landing offers assistive services for both the short and long-term. All care plans are tailored to meet the individual’s specific needs and preferences.
We recently sat down with two residents to discover their experience in receiving assisted living services. Read on to learn their personal viewpoints and how they maintain their health, independence and wellbeing.
Meet resident Barbara Preble
Moving here with her husband Ed in 2023 from Mesa, Arizona, Barbara was able to take advantage of the short-term assistance services she needed while recovering from an ear issue.
Barbara found the staff wonderful in providing the support she needed. She expressed gratitude that she was living at Prairie City Landing when this occurred. “I was so well cared for.”
These assisted living services and knowing the care staff are available put both herself and her family at ease.
“It was a factor for my family when we chose Prairie City Landing,” Barbara said. “If I need care again, even long-term, I know I can stay in our apartment. It’s such a huge advantage to know that if you need care or assisted living, it’s here and you won’t have to move.”

Meet resident Marguerite “Marge” Smith
As one of the first residents to move in, Marge has been at Prairie City Landing for over seven years. She’s been receiving long-term assisted living services and has an excellent viewpoint – on how being taken care of – has changed her life.
It’s not always easy being old and accepting help, said Marge. As one who was in the military, raised four kids and took care of a sick husband, she was the one usually in charge. She talked about taking care of herself for all this time but then having to adjust to the experience of being taken care of.
“I’m 91 years old and sometimes I need care. I have vertigo, often in the morning. All I have to do is press my button – and they come. And quickly so I don’t fall,” Marge said. “When it was really bad, someone would come sit with me and reassure me – and also listen.”
Here are a few additional assisted living services that Marge enjoys at Prairie City Landing:
“They know your name right away,” she said, making her feel more comfortable and at home. “I also like the privacy. They don’t gossip here or talk about the other residents.”
“There is great peace of mind, just knowing that someone will always be there for you. And they listen to me. Really listen. They stay as long as I need them. I really didn’t expect that kind of care when I moved here,” Marge said.
“I have the privacy I want but know they’re there when I need them,” she said. “I’m able to live my own life here. If I want to be quiet in my home, I can. No one bothers me. I also have a big apartment. I love having room for what I wanted to bring with me when I moved.”
If Marge had to choose one feature of Prairie City Landing’s assistive services, what would it be? “They treat you like a person instead of an individual who’s here to be cared for,” she said.
“People listen to me here. They hear what I’m saying. This is so important to me because when you’re old, sometimes people quit listening,” said Marge.
Any advice for new residents? “When we get old, we need care. And it’s an adjustment. I found it difficult at first to be cared for by other people. But you ease into it,” Marge said.
“I love it here. I know people who have had bad experiences in other communities but I enthusiastically give Prairie City Landing an A++.”
The staff let Marge know how important she is to them and how much they have to learn from her and the other residents.
But for Marge, the services she receives makes her life possible and gives her and the family peace of mind knowing she is well cared for.
